As a photographer myself, I am always looking for the coolest local 225 spots for a photography session. Oh Sweet Baton Rouge, You have so much to offer! I asked the best photographers I know, and got some advice, yay! I also am going to share my favorite spots. Maybe these are supposed to be a secret, but I don’t mind giving some advice that will relieve you of a serious headache. I tried to include close things to Baton Rouge, and left out New Orleans in this blog, but of course NOLA is ALWAYS a great option.
1. Downtown Baton Rouge
Downtown is FREE game and will give a more modern spin on your session, if thats what your going for. Head up to Tsunami and grab a shot over-looking the bridge. Go down by the river at sunset & grab some great lighting alongside the water (or the giant paper clips as I call them). Also, there are plenty of alleyways with cool colored walls! Steer clear of the Shaw Center though, you have to have a license to shoot, I’ve tried pulling one over on them, didn’t work….lol. BUT HEY, maybe you’ll get lucky like I did, and have an awesome couple allow your client to take a photo in their car.
2. Rural Life Museum off of Essen Lane
Looking for an open field? Fresh flowers? Here’s what I love about rural life – You can go inside the garden facility for a moderate fee of only $70 dollars. The grounds are very well kept, and the staff is wonderful. That’s where you’ll find me. I did two sessions there this week, and on one session I had the gardener pick fresh broccoli and offer it to one of my clients. Sweet! Did I mention my husband took me there on our second official date? Perhaps it’s sentimental, perhaps it’s just gorgeous. I do recommend going into the facility for Bridals though. I snapped these photos here.
3. Red Onion
Ok this one is kind of fun & quirky. Red Onion is a gift shop off of Perkins with a cute green house, and the shop is quaint with all the special items a house wife could ever want. So not at all a typical photo location. I always make sure to pick up an item to show my appreciation for allowing me to swing in and grab a few photos. I grabbed these photos here on two separate occasions. Just a gentle reminder, this is not an actual venue be respectful and it might be in your best interest to show some love and buy something!
4. LSU Hill Top Arboretum
This spot is great for portraits and family photos. Closes at Dusk. I have done alot of sessions at the Arboretum especially starting out, and still to this day! Infact this is where I got my senior photos done in 2011.
5. Monte Vista Plantation in Port Allen
Ok, I wasn’t going to add plantations in here but I had to, for multiple reasons. Monte Vista Plantation is new to the game and if you want a new & original location that not many people have… I recommend it. Great Venue. Right along the river, many cute spots with props, beautiful big oak trees, a great view of the house from the top of the levee, and the grounds are well kept. It isn’t cheap, but remember you get what you pay for. Plus the owners are pleasant.
6. St. Francis Ville – Grace Episcopal
It’s just a hop, skip, and jump away! I know it’s not Baton Rouge, but come on it’s GORGEOUS THERE! There is an old church called Grace Episcopal Church, what a location, sure it’s a grave yard but there are literally a million oak trees with moss hanging low & it’s FREE. I captured these photos there…also Afton Villa Gardens is a great spot…
7. Nottoway Plantation
8. New Orleans
With Colorful walls and a booming french quarter nothing says romance and fun like New Orleans! It’s only 50 minutes away from baton rouge….depending on how you drive you slow poke!
Thank you for reading, hope this helped! If you have any other great spots or wonderful photography location experiences, please feel free to email me your stories & spots. Have a great week. 😀
